Today I will be tackling the dreaded question of "can I have the RAW (unedited images)"? This is a question that some (not many) clients ask photographers and are hit with a hard no. But why don't photographers want to give you their unedited files?
Let's use a food analogy as we all love food! Imagine you hire a skilled pastry chef to create a stunning, multi-layered cake for a special occasion. You've seen the chef's portfolio, tasted their delicious cakes, and are excited about what they will create for you. The chef carefully selects the finest ingredients, measures them precisely, and skilfully bakes each layer to perfection. The magic, however, doesn't stop there.
When the cake is out of the oven, the chef meticulously layers on delicious frosting, decorates it with intricate details, and adds finishing touches. The end result is a masterpiece that not only tastes amazing, but looks stunning.
Now, consider asking the pastry chef for the raw ingredients—flour, eggs, sugar, and so on—along with the partially baked layers. The chef might hesitate because what makes the cake truly special is not just the raw materials but the chef's expertise in combining them, the artistry in decorating, and the overall presentation.
In photography, the equivalent of asking for RAW files is requesting the baker's raw ingredients and semi-baked layers instead of the beautifully decorated cake. The RAW files contain the basic elements captured by the camera, and the photographer's post-processing is like the chef's decorating process, adding the final touches that transform the ingredients into a work of art. Have a look at the images below. The same image was given to four of my photographer friends and you will be able to see my take on it below too.
Our editing is half of our branding and no one wants their name on an unfinished masterpiece. In the end it hurts our business, as we don't just take photos we make them.
