Just like how editing your photos balances an image, your clothing choice also has this affect. It may require some effort and shopping, however it is worth it, as pictures last forever. It really is amazing how much clothing can lift a shoot when done right. Now here are some handy tips to help you out!
Have all your clothes ready at least three weeks before your session. This will ensure that you have enough time to think long and hard about your outfit choice and that you have many nights to picture yourself in the outfit you have chosen.
Don't wear clothes that have writing or logos. This is distracting and can detract from the subjects in the images. - and we don't want that! Plain and simple goes a long way! Also something that you may think will work but really won't, is wearing the same coloured pants as each other. It will look like a pool of the same colour in photos which can not only look cheesy, but everyone blends into each other.
Atria Photography is a no-jeans zone. Instead, consider chinos as this will give a more formal look without being too overly formal.
Another no no is wearing bedazzled (diamontes) items. Simply - it does not look that great!
As mentioned, plain and simple goes far. So stay away from polka dots, stripes, florals and patterns.
Avoid loud and overbearing accessories as this will be distracting in images. Keep jewellery to a minimum. Dainty jewellery is the way to go.
In terms of watches, if you are choosing to wear one, stay away from the digital Apple watches as we don't like that robot look. We want your photos to stand the test of time - so if you are wanting to wear one, go for the classic watch look.
I am a big fan of hats as it add a lot class and style. Just stay away from the baseball caps.
Time to leave the dad-shoes at home guys...I am serious.
In some of the photos we take we will be able to see your shoes, so don't think they won't matter when choosing your outfit, as they will!
On another note, no socks or stockings with sandals.
I find that some clients underdress in winter and instead dress for the weather they wish it to be. I recommend some cosy knitted jumper if you want a warm winter vibe. As always, if you need any help, I am an email or text message away.
Do not match, instead coordinate! Pick a palette of 2-3 colours. Let this be your starting place. Think in terms of tones: blue tones, neutrals, pastels etc. If you are stuck, stick to wearing the colours of the earth. Also ensure that you coordinate with the location e.g. don't wear dark brown if you are shooting with lots of trees or green if you are shooting with a lot of green shrubbery.
Tip: Lay out all the clothing onto your bed. Shoes, socks, stockings – everything should be included! If your eye goes to any one item in particular, you can be certain that the same thing will happen in a photograph - so change the item!
My recommendation for girls hair is to have it out. as the wind catches it so elegantly. Have it neat, and not too different to how you normally have it. After all, you still want to look like yourself. I find that if you tie it up, this does limit hair movement, which makes for some lovely photos when you run your hand through your hair. Loose, romantic curls (look this up if you need to), works magic, rather than tight curls that look like Maggie noodles (it's true!). Just make sure that you take care of your frizz as this will make a difference!
Guys, make sure your hair is neat and don’t over-gel your hair! Everything shows in photos, so make sure you put effort in making it look tidy.
Whatever you do, don’t go too hard with makeup! Keep it fresh, not out of the ordinary and let it simply highlight your features, especially the eyes, as this is the focus. I do recommend that you bring as minimum, your lipstick, blush and concealer with you, for touch-ups.
If you are wanting to get your makeup done, but don't know where to go, send me a message and I can provide you with some contacts who I have worked with myself that I trust. Whatever you do, don't go to someone you don't have experience with, this happens a lot!
Tip: have your wedding day trial on the same day as your engagement shoot. That way you can test how your makeup looks in photos!
